2007 Report: Community Outreach

2007 was an exciting year for Epiphany House. We began with our 4th anniversary open house that attracted over 100 guests. It was held on the warmest January 6th in the history of weather recording and we introduced several new initiatives.
1) New Families Project. From the outset of '07 we set a goal to find five new families to adopt waiting children. We are excited to congratulate Kathryn Quigley who began and completed the adoption process of her foster son, Nicholas in Camden, NJ. We also introduced several other couples to the adoption process.   Fisher Family
2) The Bringing Nicky Home Campaign by which we aim to make Epiphany House the permanent family for a medically needy and disabled teenage boy, Nicky O'Keeffe.   Nicky
3) The Celebrate Adoptive Families Project, in which we award and celebrate families that have made a special commitment to adoption of waiting children. In July, we honored honored Dottie Gerstenfeld, who is a local foster mother that became permanent legal guardian for two adolescent boys. Dottie, who decided she wanted to raise more children, after raising 5 of her own says that she has found a depth of meaning and purpose in her life from this commitment.   Fisher Family

Our November 4th Halloween costume party (aka beef and beer) organized by John Paul Hoerdemann, on behalf of Bringing Nicky Home totally rocked. This event was organized on a very short notice and drew about 100 partiers and a few visits by the Upper Darby Police. The net profit of $570.01 was added to the Nicky fund which currently stands at $3,026.00.   Halloween

In other outreach, our support to children included partnership with the Building with Books organization and Heart Gallery Philadelphia, having a summer splash party for 50 children, a fall car wash to benefit Building With Books student service and leadership activities and playing a key organizing role for the Angel Tree project at Christ Church in Philadelphia which provided over 150 gifts at Christmas to children in shelters. Our online newsletter regularly reaches over 700 individuals. We conducted over 25 small group information sessions, took our ice cream cart to numerous community events, including the Lansdowne 4th of July parade. We continue to work on community projects with the Upper Darby and Lansdowne and Vicinity Ministeruims and with several community health agencies involved in the special medical and therapy needs of our children.

Salinna laughs a lot, and is a favorite student in her class at the George Crother's School. Salinna likes to bowl and bake. She also has a multiple personality.

2008
We celebrated our 5th anniversary on January 6th, 2008, the feast of the Epiphany, with an open house. This year Epiphany House will build on the 2007 initiatives to find new families, bring Nicky O'Keeffe to our home and celebrate adoptive families while it strategizes practical options and partnerships to expand care and services to foster/adoptive children. Epiphany House supporters can count on some noteworthy developments in 2008.

Andrew

Andy, born April 9th 1996, is an outgoing and endearing young man with lots of interests. He loves just about any outdoor activity - going to the beach, fishing, gardening or riding his bike. He also likes to work with his hands building toy houses and painting. Most of all he loves music and plays both the piano and the guitar. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he says without hesitation, an actor or a singer. Andy likes the fact that he’s smart and good at “taking care of things,” but says he’s trying to “get better at listening to his peers.” Andy’s three wishes: nice parents, a hamster and a go-kart, in that order.

If you would like to open your heart and home to Andy, please contact caseworker Stacy Wilson at (215) 340-8985.
